Nganmarriyanga Community / Nganmarriyanga School

Nganmarriyanga Community is on Palumpa Station (the old timers may remember PalumpaSchool). Palumpa is a working Aboriginal cattle station. The community has about 450-500 people and the school has a current enrollment of 152 students with a daily attendance of between 70 and 100 students.

The school was officially opened in 1987 with about 21 students. Later an extension was added to the original building with a whole new wing being added and opened in 1992. A new Pre-school building was completed in 2003.

We have two outstations attached to the school, Merepan and Nemarluk and we are currently investigating a third. There are 7 teachers (including the principal) at the school as well as 6 assistant teachers (one unfilled position), three ATAS tutors, a grounds man, a cleaner and one person in the office. We have three CDEP people who help in the school with the lunch program, classroom and with grounds maintenance. During the Wet we fly to the Outstations once a week or bring the Assistant Teachers in for training. During the Dry the Outstations Teachers visits four days a week. There are about 26 students that attend at the outstations. The language most commonly spoken in the community is Murrinh Patha. Nganmarriyanga School is an ESL school and a Peace Builders school.

The school has attached to it a Play Group. This consists of young children pre school age. They attend with a parent/aunt/grandparent, the idea being to have the children learn to mix, be exposed to school and its structure and to expose them to English. We have from Pre-school up to year Seven split into Pre-school, Lower Primary, Middle Primary, Senior Girls and Senior Boys classes.
